The first thing that struck Elian was the sound—the forest didn’t fall silent like most woods did at night. It whispered. A thousand voices rustled through the canopy, twining through the branches and settling into the roots. It wasn’t mere wind. It was something older, something that remembered.
He stood at the edge of the tree line as twilight dimmed into blue shadow. Behind him, the last stretch of road curled back toward the villages of the western marshes—places of ordinary men and simpler fears. Ahead lay Forestroot, where even hunters and traders dared not go once the sun had fled the sky.
But Elian had come seeking the forest’s truth.
He adjusted the leather strap across his shoulder and stepped beneath the towering boughs. The air shifted instantly—cooler, denser, filled with the scent of damp moss and decaying bark. His boots sank softly into the soil. Every step seemed to wake something sleeping in the ground.
The map he carried was hand-drawn, its ink faded and smeared. He’d bought it from a caravanner in Outposttide who’d spoken of a ruin at the heart of Forestroot—a ruin that shouldn’t exist. “It moves,” the man had whispered, glancing toward the horizon. “Shifts its stones like a breathing thing.”
Elian had laughed then. Now, in the thick hush of the trees, he no longer could.
He followed the path—if it could be called that—a faint depression through ferns and nettles, marked only by occasional stones bearing half-carved sigils. The symbols were unreadable, yet strangely familiar, like echoes of a language half-remembered from dreams.
A low mist began to rise from the undergrowth, silvering the trunks in ghostly sheen. It coiled around his ankles as if testing his presence. Somewhere deep within, an owl called once, and then silence swallowed the sound.
The further Elian walked, the more he felt the forest watching him.
Every leaf seemed to lean toward him, every vine crept just slightly closer when he wasn’t looking. He tried to shake the thought—it was only his imagination, stirred by fatigue—but Forestroot didn’t let go easily.
He came upon a fallen tree, massive and moss-covered, its bark embedded with strange shards of metal that glowed faintly in the gloom. He crouched beside it. The shards were ancient—iron, perhaps, though they pulsed with a dim bluish light, like veins alive beneath skin.
