Thank you for your interest in becoming a notary public in the State of South Carolina, or for continuing your notarial duties. You are to be commended for your desire to serve the public.
As a notary public, you hold an important position in South Carolina. This booklet is provided to you to help you understand the duties of a notary and the trust which has been placed in you as a public official. I am excited about the new revisions to the notary statutes passed by the General Assembly in Act 185 of 2014. These changes will provide guidance and clarification on the responsibilities of a notary. These new changes will also address many of the questions and concerns our office receives from notaries and the public about the role of a notary public.
Once commissioned as a notary public, it is the responsibility of the notary public to maintain a level of education appropriate for conducting notarial duties. I encourage you to attend workshops on a yearly basis to remain informed on current issues affecting notaries in order to assist you in performing your duties correctly.
