Prince Theodore has one month, one golden ring, and his grandmother's blessing to choose a wife. What he does not have is any idea that his hostess, in a burst of pure hospitality, has just sealed three separate invitations with his own crest.

Three young women walk into a moonlit hedge maze at the same hour, each believing she was asked alone. What happens at the centre is not a disaster. It is worse: it is entirely innocent, entirely funny, and entirely visible from inside a hedge, where a society correspondent has been crouching for four hours with a notebook.

He prints nothing but the truth. He does a great deal of damage. And when the Queen offers to end the whole business in nine minutes by methods that would certainly work, the Golden Prince has to decide what his kindness is actually worth.

A sunny comedy in blank verse about honourable people under public pressure, and about the difference between being admired and being known.

The aristocratic characters speak in blank verse; the newspaperman speaks prose, and you hear the difference before you can name it. Shared lines — one ten-syllable line divided between two speakers — are set on the page so you can see exactly where one voice cuts into another. A short note explains both conventions in a page, and then gets out of the way.

It is a comedy: everybody ends happier than they began and nobody is destroyed on the way. But it is not a comedy without pressure. There is a journalist who never lies and ruins three reputations anyway. There is a queen who can make the problem disappear, and a prince who will not let her. There is a man who has spent eleven years being clever instead of honest, standing in a flower bed, working out how to stop.
