MEC122 is an 8 Reales, dated circa1715, struck in the Mexico City mint. It has been sold previously as an artifact of the 1715 Fleet, which sank along the east coast of Florida. While it might have been cargo in that fleet at some point, it ended up, along with many similar cobs, in the Middle East.

In "The Middle East Collection Volume One" Charles Winn highlights a specific group of Spanish cobs that were gathered by a single English coin enthusiast as he explored the area of the Middle East while employed as a geologist. In 2018 this anonymous collector began selling these coins and they appeared in the famous Heritage Auctions.

The author is credited with his research library regarding Spanish colonial cobs and is frequently called upon by collectors to track down the provenance of their own specimens. The coins featured in this book are some that have repeatedly surfaced in the commercial marketplace as items recovered from particular shipwrecks. Their real provenance is questionable, and the author now cites 197 cobs introduced to the Spanish colonial coin collector venue via the unidentified Englishman who allegedly found them elsewhere.
