Very Large Scale Integration has, over the past five decades, transformed from a specialised engineering discipline into the invisible foundation of nearly every facet of modern life. This book, VLSI Circuit Design: Principles, Practices, and Perspectives for the Nanometer Era, was written to provide senior undergraduate and graduate students, as well as practising engineers seeking a structured refresher, with a comprehensive, self-contained treatment of the discipline — spanning semiconductor device physics, fabrication technology, digital circuit design styles, power and interconnect analysis, physical design, memory architecture, testability, reliability, and the analogue and emerging-technology domains that increasingly intersect with mainstream digital design.
The book is organised to reflect the natural hierarchy of VLSI design itself: beginning with the physical transistor and the fabrication process that creates it, ascending through circuit-level and gate-level design, and continuing through the physical implementation, verification, and testing methodologies that transform a design into working silicon. Each chapter is written to be reasonably self-contained, with explicit cross-references to related material in other chapters, allowing the book to serve equally well as a cover-to-cover course text or as a topical reference consulted chapter by chapter.
Throughout the text, I have aimed to balance mathematical rigor with physical and engineering intuition, favouring worked numerical examples, comparative tables, and illustrative diagrams over abstract derivation wherever the two approaches offer comparable pedagogical value. Review questions are provided at the end of every chapter, ranging from conceptual short-answer questions to quantitative problems requiring direct application of the chapter's key equations, and are suitable for both self-study and formal coursework assignment.
I am grateful to the generations of researchers, engineers, and educators whose collective work over more than half a century has built the extraordinary body of knowledge this book attempts to organise and present. Any errors of omission or interpretation that remain are, of course, my own.
