I am a sports photographer based in Brisbane, Australia, photographing community rugby union. In 2025, I was engaged in a part-time role by the Souths Rugby Union club in Brisbane to photograph the 2025 season and manage the clubs social media accounts. 2025 was a unique season of winter rugby. WInter typically being the dry season in Brisbane, 2025 turned out to be one of the wettest Brisbane winters in recent history. Most games were played in windy, rainy conditions, at times torrential rain, conditions usually experienced during a tropical summer. Photographing in these conditions was challenging. Most games were spent navigating my camera in one hand, holding an umbrella in the other, towel on hand trying to keep my gear dry. No fancy camera covers or super long telephoto lenses shooting from the cover of a grandstand. Some days, I ended up having to retreat to the clubhouse for cover. This book documents the season as each game threw up more and more challenging conditions for the players to manage. This book doesn’t document match results or focus on particular teams or players. Instead, the weather is the main player, the antagonist, with the players taking on the part of the protagonist, as they attempt to navigate the conditions. By the end of the season, I had a catalogue of shots that reflected the season that was 2025, ‘The rainy season’.
