This is a case study of a well educated Black man, who came to Houston in the 1980’s to seek a better life but to ran into the worst case of police and judicial southern hospitality that one could imagine. All because this young Black man, “didn’t know his place”. It replicates the legacy of Emmett Till, the Deacons for Justice, the Black Panther Party, and the Harriet Tubmans. In general, it represents a microcosm of individual prejudices by race, gender, and education that escalated into police and judicial institutional racism for Hall’s refusal to be treated by color only.
This book also represents hope in “White America”. Individuals like Mr. Bearden, who sold Hall has first real estate four plex to send his two children to college. A white lieutenant, who wrote an affidavit, stating Hall was not mentally unstable for challenging white supremacy. A white sergeant, who informed Hall that his payroll was flagged with false HIPPA information for twenty five years. Then, there was the life restoring balance by a few black people who understood that Hall’s condition was the same condition that they were subjected to: Margie Phelps, Dr. Johnnella Bradford, Jonquia Hall, Martice Hall, Ernestine Mays, Clifford Hall, Harry Landry, Jerry Mills, and his Phillipina soul mate, Coco, who constantly nursed the wounds so he could keep pursuing Justice. And let’s not forget, the FBI agent who verified that there may have been a wire tap but it wasn’t authorized by a Federal Judge and no court records exist.
Then, this book represents the “Blue Print” that was given to him by two of the most extraordinary parents: Curtis “Red” Hall and Mabel “Mae” Hall. A blend of military and street toughest anchored in Christian teaching embracing faith, prayer, and character in all situations. Also, I must mention my Cherokee grandmother, Snowz Curtis. Finally, this book represents the American story. A story of marginal people who come to this country for a better life. America has its problems, it can and will give the illusion of inclusion but each of us must keep fighting; because you lose, when you give up. Hall claims his legal journey is a mantra claiming that the truth and a lie cannot co-exist. The Courts cannot be used as a weapon for the highest bidder.
