The standard story goes like this: we carry Stone Age equipment through a manufactured landscape, and the collision explains everything from the slot machine to the notification badge. It is a tidy story. It sells well. And it quietly moves the defendant from a design studio to a savanna nobody can subpoena.
This book puts that story on trial. The charge is not that the brain is young. The charge is that its age is a constant, and constants do not explain things that changed in fifteen years. The prosecution calls an unusual witness: the household cat, who ignored television for half a century and then began to watch it, having undergone no evolution whatsoever. What changed was the refresh rate of the screen.
From there the argument opens out. Nature was always full of counterfeits: orchids that impersonate wasps, fireflies that mimic the mating code of the species they intend to eat. Perception was never contact with the world, only a rendering maintained under the tyranny of nerve conduction speed. There was never a match for anything to mismatch with. Meanwhile something genuinely new can be watched installing itself in real time: reflexes built in months, transmitted to toddlers before speech, and destroyed by a software update. Instincts with release dates.
What actually changed is the clock of the forger. Selection needed a thousand generations to improve a lure. An optimization team needs a week, and can measure the result on Tuesday across a few million people. This is a book about who holds that stopwatch, and about why blaming the Pleistocene is such a comfortable and profitable mistake.
Written with affection for everyone involved, including the cat, and including the author, who wrote most of it on a machine that was actively trying to interrupt him.
