Rap Laureate: Issue 3: Rapsody (English Edition) pdf

Issue 3 of the Rap Laureate series honors Rapsody, the 2026 Rap Laureate.

Presented each year by Words Beats & Life, the Rap Laureate anthology and award series recognizes emcees whose artistry, storytelling, technical skill, and cultural impact deserve serious study and preservation. It is both an archive and a teaching tool, built to connect hip-hop scholarship with the lived experience of hip-hop communities.

This issue follows Rapsody's work across The Idea of Beautiful, Laila's Wisdom, Eve, and Please Don't Cry. It argues that she belongs in wider conversations about literature, pedagogy, Black feminist thought, and Southern Black cultural traditions, and not only in the hip-hop canon.

The anthology moves through five sections:

Invocation: original poetry by Dr. Tara Betts and Dee Scribes, including a meditation inspired by Eve
Context: Dr. Jason Nichols traces Rapsody's path from Snow Hill, North Carolina, and places her among Black women who protect the culture
Scholarship: Prowess The Testament breaks down her flow, breath control, internal rhyme, cadence, and stagecraft
Criticism: Mikal Amin Lee reads her catalog as testimony, resistance, and cultural memory
Practice: educator Jamila Sams offers a classroom-ready lesson on self-worth and beauty standards, built around "Crown"

A selected-listening playlist curated by DJ RBI lets readers hear the music alongside the writing.
