I wrote Reliable Recall Training because “come” is one of those commands that often seems perfectly trained—right up until the moment you actually need it.

At home, many dogs come without hesitation. Outside, everything changes. There are other dogs, people, smells, movement, wildlife, and dozens of things that can suddenly become more interesting than the person calling them. That does not necessarily mean the dog is stubborn or that the training has failed. More often, it means the recall was never gradually built for those harder situations.

In this book, I wanted to take a practical approach to that problem.

We begin with the basics: choosing a clear recall cue, making the return genuinely worthwhile for the dog, and building a strong response in an environment where success is easy. From there, we gradually add distance, new locations, a long line, distractions, excitement, other dogs, scents, people, and wildlife.

I also cover the mistakes that can quietly weaken recall over time, including repeating the command again and again, calling the dog only when the fun is about to end, or asking for a response in situations the dog has never been prepared to handle.

There is also a separate section on emergency recall, guidance for deciding when a dog may be ready for more off-leash freedom, and a practical 30-day training plan that brings the lessons together.

This book is not about promising perfect obedience in every possible situation. No responsible trainer can guarantee that. It is about building a much stronger habit of turning away from the environment and coming back to you, while still understanding when a leash and sensible management remain the safer choice.
