Seven Levels of Money is a quiz book covering seven areas of personal finance: credit, debt, saving, budgeting, taxes, investing, and insurance. It contains 176 multiple-choice questions. Each one has four options, one correct answer, a plain-language explanation of why that answer is correct, and a citation to the source the fact came from.

You will find out, among other things:

• What a 24% APR actually charges you, and why it is more than 24%
• What a tax bracket does when your income rises, and why a raise cannot cost you money
• What a credit file records, and what it quietly ignores

The questions come first. The answers are collected at the end of each section, so you commit to a guess before you see the explanation. That is the whole design. Reading a question and its answer together produces the feeling of understanding without the fact of it.

Every explanation cites its source, and nearly all of those sources are federal agencies and regulators: the Consumer Financial Protection Bureau, the Internal Revenue Service, Investor.gov, and the National Association of Insurance Commissioners. This book contains no opinions about which card to get or which fund to buy. It covers only what is documented and verifiable: how a mechanism works, what a term means, what a law requires.
