In the “Boys of Nixon Field,” author Jim Levering traces the story of baseball in the tightly-knit community of Gettysburg from the first official three game series in November 1865, between the College Auroras and the Town Team, to the most recent presence of the Gettysburg Grays in the Southern Penn League in the twenty-first century. It is the tale of how a town still reeling from the scars of the Civil War finds hope and a sense of community during, not only the Post Civil War Era but through many of America’s trials and tribulations including World War I and the Great Depression. It is a story that goes beyond the tales of famed hall of fame pitcher Eddie Plank and follows many of the town’s other less frequently mentioned local heroes like “Doc” Tate, Allie Holtzworth, Reverend Paul Reid Pontius, Ira Plank, “Hen” Bream, Roy “Punk” Mundorff and Bill Duncan who remained impassioned enthusiasts throughout their lifetimes breathing inspiration and life into the sport we all have come to know and love.
