Solaar is a student with two projects on one bench and a deadline he is not going to make.
The first world broke under his hands while he stood close enough to watch it go. It was mended without him, by the people living inside it, and he does not entirely understand how. The second one is failing while he watches, and the rule of his whole craft is one sentence long: you can establish a world, you cannot control how they behave within it.
He has already broken that rule once. It took three words and about a second and a half, and a friend on a dying shelf has been carrying the weight of them ever since.
Across the glass, a green woman who has held a world alone for eighty million years crosses the dark with three strangers and a sword made by three peoples who do not like each other, and goes to a war that is not hers. On the other side of it is a cold man with a ledger who has worked out exactly what he is willing to become, and has volunteered.
What happens next is watched from a low room on a red world by somebody who could stop it, and does not, and has to sit there and find out like everybody else.
