THE DOW: VOLUME 5 — 2013–2015 Between 2013 and 2015, the Dow Jones Industrial Average was revised to incorporate a new generation of corporate power. Goldman Sachs, Nike, and Visa entered the index in 2013, followed in 2015 by Apple, which replaced AT&T.

This fifth volume of THE DOW, LG Williams’s seven-volume conceptual series, takes that recalibration as its subject: the growing authority of finance, global consumer culture, electronic payments, and personal technology, and the elevation of Apple into the thirty-company body through which American economic importance was officially represented.

Part financial history, part cultural document, and part conceptual artwork, THE DOW: VOLUME 5 — 2013–2015 examines the canonization of a new corporate order—and the moment when the devices, brands, financial systems, and technologies of contemporary life assumed their place within one of America’s most enduring measures of prosperity.

THE DOW was first conceived by LG Williams in 1999 as a conceptual artwork examining the language, mythology, and historical composition of the Dow Jones Industrial Average.

LG Williams is a Los Angeles-based artist. He has served as Endowed University Instructor at the Academy of Art University, Robert Hughes Distinguished Visual Artist-in-Residence at The Lodge in Hollywood, California, and Emmy Hennings Distinguished Professor at D(D).DDDD University. His work has been exhibited nationally and internationally, including at The Internet Pavilion of La Biennale di Venezia, and has been featured in Artforum, The New York Times, Times Literary Supplement, The Guardian, The Japan Times, Los Angeles Times, La Stampa, Bookforum, Purple Diary, Mousse Magazine, and The Brooklyn Rail.
