Since 1967, the second has been defined as a count.
Not as a fraction of a day. As a fixed number of oscillations of a caesium atom. And when you follow the chain down, so is almost every other unit we have: length, mass, voltage, current. Metrology has quietly become the science of counting things that repeat.
So what is being counted?
This book takes that question seriously and arrives somewhere smaller and stranger than you might expect. Time is a field with a value at every place, a local pace at which everything unfolds; gravity is its gradient; and the one question that sounds most fundamental, how fast is time running here, turns out to have no content at all. Only differences between places are real, and those have been measured across the height of a stack of books.
Along the way: why falling cannot be felt, why the cellar is warm, why the deepest places in the universe are the quickest, and why the framework's own account of black holes was destroyed by an observation of Mercury made in 1859.
No equations. Ten chapters. One prediction, written down before the measurement, with the conditions for losing it stated in advance.
