Sam Collins fit the profile of a normal thirteen-year-old kiwi schoolboy. When his uncle Mike offers to take him on a flight through the New Zealand mountains, his mother, already struggling to make ends meet, agreed. Jim, the man who chartered the trip, was the only other passenger on the Cessna. The weather turned sour and with the passes rapidly disappearing, the little plane crashes on a windswept saddle. Jim and Sam survive the crash though their situation quickly becomes perilous. The old man, though frail, teaches Sam bushcraft and how to survive in the unforgiving New Zealand forest. Practical skills he had developed himself, and other more spiritual aspects that had been handed down to him by a mystical Maori bushman. Sam entered the bush as a petulant city kid; when he emerged several days later, he was a man.
