Societal challenges are becoming ever more serious and complex. Whether the potential effects on employment from the rise of AI, or looming climate change effects among other environmental realities increasingly experienced on the ground around the world, the need for successful transitions going forward is clear. Necessary progress, however, has been lacking and is often politically stymied. How can such essential progress become fully enabled?
Transition Momentum, the latest offering from Cary Krosinsky and Johnny Huang of the Sustainable Finance Institute, provides critical insight into new ways forward that can help usher in a new age of transition sufficiency. Within, the first part of the book explores New Measures and Mechanisms, including a better way to measure country level progress rather than relying solely on GDP, which we call Transition Momentum. A better measure is badly needed given GDP’s insufficiency at helping guide country level strategies with the need for positive environmental and social transitions in mind. The future of data, academia and the media are also fully considered, in so far as methods for knowledge development with the need for transitions in sharp focus. How to truly enable transitions is also explored, with learnings from early attempts at corporate, investor and country level progress as well as the COP Process in mind. We also provide insight from leading thinkers we greatly respect, as there are many important perspectives to consider when it comes to getting transitions right and no one person or country likely has the full answer. What might make sense in a developed Western context does not in a developing Asian nation, for example. We are stronger when learning from each other, listening and collaborating for mutually achieved success, including financially.
Transition Momentum provides a new way forward, learning from global perspectives and multiple generations of sustainable finance theory and experience, shining a light on best ways forward for helping foster future economic and societal success.
